Now that you know there are different styles of communicating, it’s time to put that knowledge into practice. Everyone will come face to face with someone who values different elements when communicating. Here are some ways to deal with each person who communicates with a style unlike yours.
If everyone was the same, it would be easier to communicate, but boring to live with. Differences of opinion lead to new perspectives and fresh ideas. It catapults the world forward in all types of directions one never thought possible. Advances in science, humanities, medicine and technology are a result of the differences in thought patterns and experiences leading to new ways of communication. We are not all alike for a very good reason.
As a leader, it is a part of your job to communicate effectively with your team, your bosses and possibly clients. Becoming intimately aware of the styles that might be employed in those conversations will help you to understand how each individual needs to hear your message so it is well received.
The Scenario
We are going to go through the process of communicating with each of the four communication styles from the viewpoint of a single issue. The scenario here is that the company is looking to find another building to occupy because of space constraints right now. How would you communicate this problem to an Achiever, Anchor, Adventurer and Analyzer to get your point across about this issue?
Achievers – An achiever, as we have learned, deals with facts, details, the present tense, actions, logic and solid analysis. Within the current scenario, you would do well to mention the reasons for a possible move that are backed up by solid data showing projections for company growth, the need for additional employees and the amount of space to house them. Present the possible solutions to the issue as well.
Anchors – An anchor deals with facts but also feelings. They are concerned with the present but subjectively find value in the human issues. Within the current scenario, you would do well to mention how employees are feeling right now about the cramped facilities in which they have to work and lack of resources due to growth. Also include the pertinent facts that you mentioned to the achiever.
Adventurers – Adventurers are “big picture” and idea people. Within the current scenario, you would do well to mention not only the human aspect of the current situation versus moving into a larger, more spacious building but also what it would mean for the future. Create a vision that includes: space for expansion as the client base expands, more amenities and more resources for employees.
Analyzers – Analyzers are logical but also look for the “big picture”. Within the current scenario, you would do well to mention the future implications of a move now along with solid analysis for a move as it pertains to the company bottom line. Use your facts to move along to the logical conclusion that a move is in the best interests of all.
