Burnout is a concept that most of us are aware of. In fact, you’ve probably experienced it on a small scale from time to time. Burnout is defined as a psychological condition in which a person suffers from long-term exhaustion and diminished interest in work. The hallmarks of burnout include exhaustion, cynicism, and inefficiency.
Burnout has serious implications not just for your business but also for your health and well-being. Studies have shown that burnout increases stress hormones and has been linked to heart disease and mental health conditions like depression.
Interestingly enough, the opposite of burnout is “engagement.” When you take a look at the pillars of successful entrepreneurship, engagement is paramount. It’s an essential characteristic because it impacts every facet of your business. Let’s take a look at the primary causes of burnout and how to avoid it and stay engaged and passionate about your business.
Working Too Much
As an entrepreneur you probably feel like trying to complete your daily task list is an act of futility. You could work around the clock and still not get everything done. If you feel like this often then it’s time to take a second look at how you approach your business. You’re doing too much and you’re probably doing things that don’t contribute to your bottom line. As an entrepreneur it’s your job to lead the business. You don’t have to personally manage every single task, and you shouldn’t.
Not Enough Personal Time
Of course, working too much and not taking enough personal time go hand in hand. If you weren’t working around the clock, you would have time to focus on your mental and physical wellbeing. This is so important to preventing burnout that you should schedule it and make personal time a weekly, if not daily, priority. Identify one thing that you can do for yourself each day and make it a priority.
Losing Yourself
One stage of burnout is called “depersonalization.” It’s what happens when you neglect your essential self and let your social self take the lead. You forget who you are and what your core values are. Instead, you operate almost automatically as you check off the things that need to be accomplished each day. To be quite blunt, your business will fail if you lose yourself. Your essential self is what gives your business the life and vitality that is unique to you. When you’re gone, your business is too.
Avoiding Burnout
Take a look at your task list and begin eliminating dreaded tasks first. For example, if you hate to call to remind clients that they have a coaching appointment with you, hire an assistant to do that or automate it. Now, replace that time you would have spent calling clients with something that makes you feel joyful. It’s a small step to take but it’s an important one. You and your business deserve it.
